From Wedding Day to Their First Baby: A Farm Maternity Session in York, PA
York farm maternity sessions don’t get much more meaningful than this one. Some stories simply feel like they were meant to happen, and this is one I’ll never forget. Years before photographing this beautiful evening on their family farm, I unexpectedly became the photographer for their wedding after another photographer never showed.
York Farm Maternity Sessions Don’t Always Begin in a Field
A few years ago, around 10 o’clock on a Saturday morning, my phone rang. It was my friend from Indigo Woods Floral Design, and the photographer Anna and Caleb had hired for their wedding never showed up. After all of the planning that goes into a wedding day, they suddenly found themselves without someone to document it.
I’ll be honest…my first thought was, I don’t know about this.
Wedding days take preparation, and I definitely wasn’t planning to photograph one that afternoon. But after thinking about it for a few minutes, I looked at my oldest daughter, Azlyn, and said, “Why not? I don’t have anything else going on today.” We grabbed our cameras and headed out.
When we arrived, something funny happened.
Instead of feeling like the last-minute replacement photographers, it felt like we had been part of the plan all along. Anna and Caleb welcomed us with open arms, their families were incredibly kind, and by the end of the day, I couldn’t imagine that wedding happening any other way.
Sometimes life has a funny way of putting the right people in the right place at exactly the right time.
Fast forward a few years, and I found myself photographing them again. Only this time, we weren’t celebrating a wedding. We were celebrating the little boy who is about to make them Mom and Dad.
A farm maternity session with a story behind it.
Some sessions are beautiful because of the light. Others are beautiful because of the location. This one was beautiful because of the story behind it.
Anna and Caleb’s maternity session took place at NovaRoot Farm, the farm they purchased together in the fall of 2023. It is where they are building their own life, growing their own operation, and now preparing to bring home their first baby. As a York PA maternity photographer, I always love when a session location actually means something to the family. It makes the photos feel more personal, more honest, and more like a real piece of their story.
This wasn’t just a pretty field at sunset. This was their home. Their farm. Their beginning as parents.
Five generations of farming.
Caleb’s connection to farming started long before NovaRoot Farm. He is the fifth generation to farm at his family farm, Shady Nook Farm. Growing up, he followed his grandfather, Steve, around the farm, helping with their hog operation, making hay, and harvesting corn and soybeans. It was the kind of childhood where you learn by doing, and where family history is passed down through long days, hard work, and time spent side by side.
In 2018, Caleb and his grandfather went into business together raising commercial meat goats. That experience became the foundation for what he and Anna are building today. Caleb gained so much knowledge from those years, and you can tell that farming is not just something he does. It is part of who he is.
Now Anna and Caleb produce hay, sell ADM feed, and raise ABGA-registered Boer goats at NovaRoot Farm. They also rent part of Caleb’s family farm from his grandfather and great-uncle, and Steve, who is 82 years old, still helps make hay by driving tractor.
That detail might be one of my favorite parts of their story.
There is something really special about generations working together. There is something even more special about knowing that Anna and Caleb’s baby boy will grow up surrounded by that same love for the land, the animals, and the people who came before him.
A location that actually means something
When people ask me where they should take maternity photos, I always tell them to choose a place that feels like them. That might be a field, a garden, a park, a creek, their backyard, or in this case, their own farm.
NovaRoot Farm is not just where Anna and Caleb took maternity photos. It is where they are building their future. It is where their son will come home. It is where he will grow up seeing his dad work, watching the goats, walking through the fields, riding along on tractors, and learning what it means to be part of a family that cares deeply about what they do.
That is what makes these photos matter. Yes, they are beautiful maternity photos. But they are also a piece of family history.
From husband and wife to mom and dad
One of the things I love most about photographing returning clients is getting to see how their stories keep growing. I met Anna and Caleb in the most unexpected way on their wedding day, and now here they are, getting ready to become parents.
There is something really sweet about that full-circle feeling. The same couple I photographed as newlyweds is now standing in front of my camera with a baby boy on the way. The wedding day was the beginning of their marriage, but this season is the beginning of something completely new.
Their family is growing. Their farm is growing. Their story is growing.
And I feel lucky that I’ve been able to document more than one chapter of it.
Why maternity photos matter.
Pregnancy is such a short season, even though it does not always feel short while you are living it. There are the appointments, the waiting, the nerves, the excitement, the exhaustion, and the dreaming about what life will look like once your baby is finally here.
That is why maternity photos matter so much. They give you a way to remember who you were before everything changed. Before the late-night feedings, before the newborn stretches, before the first little smiles, before your whole world suddenly looked different.
For Anna and Caleb, these photos will always be connected to this farm and this season of waiting. Someday, their son will be able to look back and see the place where his parents were preparing for him. He will see the fields, the goats, the dog, the quiet evening light, and two people who already loved him so much before they ever held him.
Planning Your Own York PA Maternity Session
If you are expecting and starting to think about maternity photos, I usually recommend scheduling your session between 30 and 34 weeks. That is typically the sweet spot where your bump is beautifully round, but you are still comfortable enough to walk, sit, stand, cuddle, and enjoy the session without feeling completely over it.
Your maternity session does not have to look like anyone else’s. It can be on your family farm, in your backyard, at a local park, in a wildflower field, near the water, or somewhere that simply feels like home. The best sessions are the ones that feel personal to you.
