Let’s talk about one of my go-to spots in York, PA — Mill Creek Preserve.
I don’t even know how many sessions I’ve done here at this point, but there’s a reason I keep going back. It just works. Every time. For family sessions, maternity, seniors… even if you’re someone who has no idea where to take photos, this is always one of my first suggestions.
It’s easy to get to, it’s not overwhelming, and it has just enough going on to make your gallery feel really full without us having to run all over the place.

If you’ve been around for a while, you already know I care a lot about light. And this spot just does its thing without me having to fight it.

In the evening, especially during golden hour, the sun comes through the trees in the softest way. It’s warm, it’s glowy, and it just makes everything look better — skin tones, colors, all of it. You don’t have to think about it, you don’t have to worry about it… it just works.
Light is the most important part of photography. This location gives everything!
And if you’re looking for a family photographer in York, PA, this is exactly the kind of location that gives you those soft, natural, glowy images.

There’s a creek, and I’m telling you right now — this is where sessions go from “okay” to really good.
Kids immediately loosen up. They’re throwing rocks, splashing, getting a little wet, and all of a sudden we’re not asking them to do anything… they’re just doing their thing. And those are always the photos parents end up loving the most.
Even for maternity or couples, it adds so much. It gives you something to do, something to interact with, and it keeps everything from feeling stiff or overthought.
If you’re okay with a little mess (and honestly, it’s worth it), this part makes the whole session.

This is one of the biggest reasons I love Mill Creek Preserve for photo sessions in York.
We can move a little — hit the bridge, the creek, some open areas, some shaded spots — and your gallery ends up looking like we were in multiple locations. But you’re not walking forever, and you’re not dragging kids from one end of the park to the other.
It’s that perfect in-between where you get variety without the stress.

And this matters way more than people think.
There are so many locations that look pretty online, but once you get there, it’s crowded, people are everywhere, and you feel like you’re on display the whole time.
This is not that.
Mill Creek Preserve is usually quiet, and it gives you space to just be there with your family without feeling rushed or watched. Especially if you have little kids, or you’re already a little nervous about photos, this makes a huge difference.

This location looks best when everything feels soft and natural.
Neutrals, earthy tones, soft colors — that’s always going to photograph really well here. Creams, greens, soft blues, light browns… things that blend in with the environment instead of pulling attention away from you.
You don’t need to go out and buy all new outfits. You don’t need to match perfectly. Just keep it simple, and if you’re stuck, I’ll help you figure it out.
I say this all the time, but the location really does affect how your session goes.
Here, kids can move. They can explore. They can get distracted and come back. It doesn’t feel like they’re being asked to sit still and behave the whole time.
And if things don’t go exactly how you pictured? That’s fine. We adjust, we roll with it, and those moments usually end up being the best ones anyway.

I know this sounds small, but it matters.
There’s a porta potty. There’s a trash can. There’s a picnic table. You can set stuff down, take a second if you need to, and not feel like you’re stuck in the middle of nowhere.
If you’re a parent, you already know why this is a win 😂
It’s right off I-83, which means you’re not driving all over York County trying to find some hidden spot.
You pull in, park, and we’re basically ready to start. No stress, no confusion, no “are we even in the right place?” moment.
Honestly, you can’t go wrong.
Spring is fresh and green and feels really soft. Summer gives you shade and the option to use the creek. Fall is just… insane (in the best way), which is why it books up so fast. And winter is quiet and simple if you want something different.
If I had to pick a favorite, I’m always going to lean late summer into fall. The light is perfect, the colors are good, and everything just comes together.

If you’ve been trying to figure out where to do your photos, this is one of those places I can confidently say will not disappoint.
It works for family sessions, maternity, seniors — all of it — and it takes a lot of the pressure off because the location is already doing so much for you.
If you want to see what a family session looks like here or you’re thinking about a maternity session, this is such a good spot for both.
