What to Wear for Maternity Photos (Dress ideas that photograph beautifully and feel like you)

Let’s talk maternity outfits — because this is usually the moment where panic sets in.

You’re pregnant. You’re tired. Your feet might be swollen. You’re basically running your own internal space heater… but somehow your hair is finally cooperating and looking amazing. Go figure. And now you’re wondering if the shoes you bought two months ago are even going to fit on the day of your session.

Also quietly hoping that little bugger stays put long enough for you to actually get maternity photos in the first place. Totally normal. Here’s what I want you to hear before you overthink this:

Maternity photos don’t need a perfect dress or some dramatic, over-the-top look. The outfits that photograph best are the ones that feel comfortable, don’t itch, don’t pinch, and don’t make you want to rip them off halfway through. We can keep this simple. I promise.

Start With Comfort (Always)

Before we even talk about colors or styles, we need to get one thing straight: If you’re uncomfortable, it will show. Every single time.

If a dress looks cute but you’re worried about a button popping off mid-session or a seam silently holding on for dear life… that stress is going to live on your face. And no amount of editing fixes that.

The best maternity outfits are the ones that: Let you move without thinking about it Don’t require constant adjusting, tugging, or strategic hand placement Feel good whether you’re standing, sitting, or walking (because yes, we do all of that) If you’re sucking in, holding your breath, or mentally preparing for fabric failure every time you sit down — it’s not the one. I don’t care how good it looks on the hanger.

Comfort wins. Every time. And bonus? Comfortable outfits photograph way better than ones that are one deep breath away from ripping.

Flowy Dresses Are Your Best Friend

There’s a reason flowy maternity dresses are everywhere — it’s not a trend, they just work. Flowy dresses do a few very important things: They show off your bump without clinging to every single thing They move when you move (which looks amazing in photos) They feel softer and more natural than anything tight or structured.

Basically, they give you all the bump, none of the regret. Empire waists, wrap dresses, and anything with a little room through the skirt are usually a safe bet. They skim in the right places, give you breathing room, and don’t make you feel like you’re stuffed into something that’s fighting back.

And just to be clear — you do not need to show your belly if that’s not your thing. You don’t need a bare belly moment, a skin-tight dress, or anything that makes you uncomfortable. Covered bumps photograph just as beautifully (sometimes even better).

And don’t worry… if you do want to show the tummy, I promise it won’t turn into a “girl’s gone wild” situation 😅 We keep it tasteful, soft, and sweet — always.

Stick With Soft, Neutral Colors

When it comes to maternity photos, neutral and muted colors are always going to be your safest bet — and not because they’re boring. It’s because they keep the focus on you, not whatever your outfit is screaming.

Think: Cream Beige Soft blush Muted florals Warm browns Light blues and sage tones

These colors photograph beautifully whether we’re outside or in your home, and they age really well. Like, ten-years-from-now-you’re-still-glad-you-picked-this kind of well. What we’re trying to avoid is anything that walks into the photo before you do.

That usually means skipping: Neon colors (because no one needs their dress reflecting light onto their face) Super heavy or busy patterns Logos or bold graphics that pull attention away from your bump If your outfit is the loudest thing in the photo, it’s doing too much.

Soft, simple colors let you be the main character — exactly how it should be.

My Favorite Places to Shop for Maternity Dresses

I get asked this all the time — like all the time — so I’m just going to save us all some back-and-forth and put it right here.

These are my go-to places for maternity dresses that photograph beautifully, feel comfortable, and don’t make you feel like you’re wearing a costume.

WORTH COLLECTIVE If you love: Soft, neutral color palettes

Flowy, romantic styles Dresses that feel elevated but not “too much” Worth Collective is ALWAYS a solid choice. Their dresses are comfortable, bump-friendly, and move really nicely — which is exactly what we want. They’re especially great for outdoor maternity sessions where a little flow and movement goes a long way.

Basically, if you want to feel pretty, comfortable, and not like you’re trying too hard… this is a great place to start.

Morning Lavender If your style leans more soft, airy, and feminine, Morning Lavender is a really good option.

They have: Light, flowy dresses Soft florals that don’t overpower Styles that feel pretty without being fussy

These are great if you want something that feels romantic but still relaxed. Nothing stiff, nothing scratchy, nothing that makes you feel like you need to suck in or stand a certain way the entire time. Perfect for outdoor sessions, golden hour light, and anyone who wants that effortless look without overthinking it.

Baltic Born Baltic Born is for when you want a little drama — but the good kind. Think: Rich textures Flowy sleeves

Dresses that make a statement without screaming for attention A lot of their dresses aren’t technically labeled maternity, but they’re super bump-friendly and photograph beautifully.

These are great if you want something that feels a little extra while still being comfortable and flattering. If you’ve ever said, “I want something special, but not over-the-top,” this is probably your place.

Amazon (Yes, Really) Listen. Don’t sleep on Amazon. If you’re short on time, don’t want to spend a ton, or just need something quick — Amazon actually has some really great maternity dress options.

The key is knowing what to look for: Flowy skirts Stretchy fabrics Simple silhouettes Skip anything overly tight or complicated, and you’ll be surprised how many solid options are there. And if you’re ever unsure, I’m always happy to look at a dress and give you an honest “yes” or “maybe not” before you order.

What About Shoes and Layers?

Let’s talk shoes — because this is where a lot of people try to be brave… and regret it later. Shoes: Comfort wins. Every time. If you can walk, stand, and move around without thinking about your feet, you’re doing it right.

Neutral sandals, boots, or even barefoot (depending on the location) all photograph beautifully. Heels are never required. If you love them and feel great in them, cool. If not? Leave them at home. Your swollen feet will thank you.

Now, layers. Layers are one of the easiest ways to add a little something extra without overthinking your outfit. Great options: Light cardigans Soft wraps or shawls Denim or neutral jackets (weather permitting)

Layers add dimension, give you something to move with, and can be taken on and off throughout the session — without taking attention away from your bump. Basically: comfy shoes, easy layers, no suffering. That’s the goal.

If you’re stuck between two dresses, questioning every choice, or texting a friend like “is this cute or am I just tired?” — you’re not alone.

Almost every maternity client feels this way. It’s part of the process. The good news? You don’t have to figure it out by yourself. When you book a maternity session with me, I help guide you through outfit choices so you’re not spiraling in a dressing room or scrolling your phone at midnight second-guessing everything.

I’ll help you choose something that photographs beautifully, feels comfortable, and actually makes sense for you.
