There’s a baby stage that doesn’t get nearly enough attention — and it’s the sitter stage. Babies are sitting on their own, full of personality, still soft and squishy, and just starting to show little glimpses of who they’re becoming. It’s quiet. It’s simple. And it goes by faster than you expect.
If you’ve been on the fence about booking a sitter session, this is your sign. As a Lancaster, PA baby and milestone photographer, sitter sessions are one of my favorite stages to photograph — and once you experience one, it’s easy to see why.
What Is a Sitter Session? A sitter session usually takes place when your baby can sit confidently on their own, most often between 6–9 months old. This is that sweet in-between stage where: Babies are sitting independently. Personality really starts to shine. Crawling hasn’t fully taken over yet. Expressions and little details are still front and center.
Sitter sessions are relaxed and baby-led. There’s no pressure for babies to perform or pose — we simply follow their lead.

This sitter session was a perfect example of why this stage matters so much. Big expressions, curious eyes, and those quiet moments that are easy to overlook when life is busy.
I love keeping sitter sessions simple. Neutral tones, soft light, and minimal distractions so the focus stays on your baby — not props or trends. We move at your baby’s pace, take breaks if needed, and keep the experience calm and easy from start to finish.

Parents love sitter sessions because they: are shorter and easier than newborn sessions. Don’t depend on babies sleeping. Capture real expressions and personality feel relaxed, not rushed. They’re also a great option if you missed newborn photos and still want meaningful images during your baby’s first year.
At the end of it all, you’re left with photos that feel honest — not overly styled or forced. Just your baby, exactly as they were in this stage.

The best time to book a sitter session is once your baby is sitting well on their own, but before crawling becomes the main event. I recommend reaching out a few weeks ahead so we can plan the timing that works best for your baby. If you’re unsure, I’m always happy to help you decide.

I photograph baby milestone sessions for families throughout Lancaster, PA, with a focus on natural, relaxed images that feel true to this season of life. If you’ve been thinking about a sitter session, this stage is worth remembering. It’s quiet, simple, and somehow one of the ones parents miss the most later. ✨ Learn more about Baby Milestone Sessions in Lancaster, PA ✨
