Let me just say this right away… if you’re reading this while holding a newborn, half awake, wondering how you’re supposed to also figure out outfits right now — I get it.
You just had a baby. You’re tired, you’re healing, you’re trying to remember when you last ate, and now we’re adding “plan outfits” to the list? No thank you. But don’t worry, I’ve got you. This does not need to be complicated.

Okay listen, I’m going to say this like your best friend would. This is not the time to squeeze into anything. We are not doing jeans, we are not doing anything tight, and we are definitely not doing outfits that require effort to “make them look good.”
We are going for comfy, soft, and forgiving. Think flowy dresses, cozy sweaters, soft knits — things that move with you and don’t cling in all the wrong places. Neutrals are your best friend here. Cream, beige, soft gray, muted tones… they photograph beautifully and keep the focus on you and your baby instead of your clothes. Simple always wins, I promise.
If you need something quick and comfy, I saved a few options that photograph really nicely (nothing fancy, just easy pieces that actually work):

This is where people overthink things the most, and I’m going to save you right now. Your baby does not need multiple outfits. In fact, the simpler the better. A plain white or cream onesie is perfect. A soft swaddle is perfect.
Honestly, just a diaper and a blanket is one of my favorite looks. Those big outfits with bows and buttons and layers usually just end up hiding your baby, and your baby is the whole point. We want to see those tiny fingers, squishy cheeks, and all those little newborn details that disappear way too fast.
If you’re like “okay but where do I even find this stuff,” I have a few super simple favorites saved here — soft swaddles, neutral onesies, all the easy basics I recommend:

Dads, we are keeping this extremely simple. Neutral t-shirt, henley, soft button-up, maybe a sweater if it’s cooler. That’s it. No logos, no bright colors, no busy patterns. If it would distract from the baby, we skip it. Stick with the same tones as mom — creams, tans, grays, soft blues. Easy, clean, done.

If you have a toddler, you already know we’re working with a wild card. So the goal here is simple and comfortable. Neutral colors, soft outfits, nothing too busy. But honestly, the most important thing is that they feel okay in what they’re wearing. A happy toddler who wants to be there will always photograph better than a perfectly dressed child who is seconds away from losing it. We keep expectations realistic and roll with it.
If you’re standing in your closet feeling completely stuck, just go neutral. Cream, beige, tan, soft gray, muted pastels. That’s the formula. These tones photograph beautifully, they don’t clash, and they keep everything feeling soft and connected instead of chaotic.
Quick and easy — bright colors, busy patterns, logos, super tight outfits, and anything uncomfortable. If you’re unsure about something, it’s probably a no. The simpler you keep it, the better your photos will look.
And this is the part I always want moms to know — you don’t have to figure this out by yourself. When you book a newborn session with me, I help you with all of this. Outfits, colors, what works in your home… all of it. Because the last thing you should be doing the week you just had a baby is stressing over what everyone is wearing.
