When to Book Your Newborn Photographer (And Why It Matters)

Okay, let’s talk about something that confuses almost every single mom at some point.

When are you actually supposed to book your newborn photographer?

Because I swear, this is where everyone pauses. You’re sitting there pregnant, trying to get everything ready, and then this thought hits like… wait, am I supposed to do this now? Or do I wait until the baby is here? What if I book too early? What if I forget?

Totally normal questions.

And if you’re expecting and starting to look into newborn photos in York or Lancaster, this is one of the biggest things to figure out early.

But here’s the honest answer — you want to book your newborn photographer while you’re still pregnant. Not after. Not once things calm down (because they won’t 😅). During pregnancy.

And I know that feels early, but there’s a really good reason for it.

Why Booking Early Actually Matters

Newborn photographers don’t just book sessions week by week like other types of shoots. Because babies come whenever they feel like it (love that for us), we plan everything around due dates, not exact days. That means only taking a certain number of newborn clients each month so there’s room for early babies, late babies, and everything in between.

Most of my newborn clients in York and Lancaster book during their second trimester. Not because they have everything figured out, but because they want to make sure they actually have a spot.

So what ends up happening is spots fill up before those babies are even here.

And then I get messages from brand new moms who just delivered and are like, “Hey, do you have anything this week?” and I genuinely wish I could say yes every time… but sometimes I’m already booked.

Booking during pregnancy takes all of that stress away. Your spot is saved, and you don’t have to think about it again while you’re in that newborn fog.

But What If My Baby Doesn’t Come On Time?

This is the part where everyone relaxes a little.

You are not locking yourself into an exact date when you book. We use your due date as a placeholder, and then once your baby arrives, you just reach out and we adjust everything based on real life.

Early baby? We adjust.
Late baby? We adjust.
Baby shows up whenever they feel like it? We adjust 😅

It’s a flexible process, and it’s meant to be.

When Newborn Photos Actually Happen

Most newborn sessions happen within the first couple weeks after your baby is born. That’s when they’re still super sleepy, extra snuggly, and naturally curl up into those little poses everyone loves.

It’s also that stage where everything still feels brand new. The tiny details, the way they stretch, the way they fit perfectly in your arms… it all changes faster than you expect.

If you want a real-life peek into what those early days actually feel like, I wrote about it here — first week with your newborn.

If You Already Had Your Baby

First of all, hi. You’re in it now 😂

And second, don’t panic if you’re just now thinking about photos. It’s always worth reaching out. Sometimes I have last-minute openings or can move things around, and even if your baby is a little older, we can still capture really beautiful moments.

So if you’re sitting there thinking, “I might be too late,” you’re probably not. Just send the message.
