When to Book Your Maternity Session (and Why Planning Ahead Changes Everything)

York & Lancaster, PA Maternity Photographer

If you’ve been wondering when to book maternity photos, you’re not alone.

It usually starts as a “I should probably do that…” somewhere in the second trimester… and then suddenly you’re 32 weeks, a little uncomfortable, and realizing time moved way faster than expected.

The sweet spot for maternity photos is usually around 28 to 34 weeks. That’s when your bump is showing in a way that photographs beautifully, but you’re not at that point where everything feels like a full-time effort yet.

And I say that gently… because pregnancy is a whole experience!!

Something to Think About Before You Book

A lot of moms looking for a maternity photographer in York or Lancaster, PA reach out thinking about just one session.

But somewhere in the conversation, it usually turns into:

“I know I’ll want newborn photos too… and probably something for the first year…”

And they’re right.

Because once your baby is here, everything shifts. Time moves faster, your schedule changes, and even simple things like booking a session can feel like a lot.

So if you already know you’re going to want more than just maternity photos, it’s worth thinking about that now instead of later.

When to Book Your Maternity Photos

If you can, reaching out around 20–25 weeks gives you the most flexibility.

Especially if you’re hoping for a certain season or planning your session somewhere in York County or Lancaster County, where timing and light can make a big difference.

My calendar fills faster than people expect (especially in the fall), and I never want someone to feel like they missed their window.

Why This Stage Matters More Than You Think

This part of your story is such a small window.

It’s that in-between season where everything is about to change, but hasn’t yet. There’s excitement, anticipation, and if we’re being real… a little bit of “I cannot wait to meet this baby.”

That’s what I’m paying attention to during your session. Not just how things look, but how this time actually feels.

What Most People Don’t Realize Until After Baby Is Here

Once your baby arrives, everything gets a little blurry.

The days are full, the nights are long, and time somehow moves faster and slower all at once.

That’s usually when I hear:
“I wish I had planned this sooner.”

Not because anything went wrong… just because it’s a lot easier to make these decisions before you’re in it.

A Simpler Way to Capture the Whole First Year

If you already know you want to capture more than just one stage, this is exactly why I created my motherhood memberships.

It’s not about booking more sessions.

It’s about not having to keep stopping every few months to figure it all out again.

Everything is planned from the beginning, so you can just enjoy it as it happens.

What the Membership Actually Looks Like

Instead of booking maternity, newborn, and milestone sessions separately, everything is bundled together in a way that makes sense for real life.

Most moms I work with in York, Lancaster, and surrounding areas choose one of three options depending on what they want to capture.

Some start with maternity and newborn, just focusing on the beginning.

Some go all in on baby’s first year — newborn, 6 months, and first birthday.

And some want the full story from bump to first birthday.

And honestly… those end up being the sessions families treasure the most.

Why So Many Moms Choose This

It’s easier!!! AND you get everything. All images, video, albums, etc.

That’s really what it comes down to.

You don’t have to keep thinking about what to book next or worry about missing a stage. It’s already taken care of.

And by the time your baby turns one, you don’t just have a few photos — you have a full story of that first year.
